Home and Honor: North Shore Gas and Community Action Partnership of Lake County partner to remodel homes for veterans in North Chicago

In honor of Veterans Day, company employees and business resource group for veterans volunteer to support veterans returning home from duty

NORTH CHICAGO – North Shore Gas and Community Action Partnership of Lake County (CAPOLC) today joined forces as part of the company’s third annual ‘Home and Honor’ event, a volunteer effort to make two townhomes in North Chicago move-in ready for veterans returning home from duty.

“Today is an amazing day to serve those who have served our country by providing them with a place to call home,” said Lori Flores Rolfson, vice president – operations and maintenance, North Shore Gas. “We are honored to have the opportunity to impact the lives of our service men and women and their families.”

“We are excited about the partnership we have with North Shore Gas. Their dedication to serving the veteran community is a demonstration of their commitment to helping those in need and giving back to the community. They are vested and engaged, demonstrated by the hours of work they do prior to Home and Honor day. We salute our partners as a premier example of corporate responsibility. Thank you to North Shore Gas,” said Mary Lockhart White, executive director and CEO of CAPOLC.

As part of the project, volunteers painted, installed fixtures, cleaned, and helped with general repairs such as repairing and installing handrails, bathroom fixtures, and electrical sockets.

Dozens of employees from North Shore Gas, including members of the company’s Military Service Members Association, a business resource group whose mission is to increase engagement and retention of veterans and to help with the transition to civilian life and the company, took part in the event.

In addition to home repairs, North Shore Gas conducted an energy audit of each townhome to help residents save energy and money on gas bills as part of its Home Energy Jumpstart program, which reduces energy and water use through free installation of energy-saving products.

Over the past three years, North Shore Gas and CAPOLC have rehabbed seven townhomes to help veterans integrate into civilian life after serving their country. This year, AmeriCorps volunteers also contributed to the project.
