North Shore Gas and Community Action Partnership of Lake County team up to provide affordable housing to veterans in North Chicago
Dozens of volunteers rehabilitate townhomes for annual Home and Honor volunteer day
NORTH CHICAGO – North Shore Gas and Community Action Partnership of Lake County (CAPOLC) joined forces to rehabilitate townhomes for two veterans in North Chicago on Saturday, Sept. 23.
Dozens of employee volunteers from North Shore Gas participated in the second annual Home and Honor volunteer day. This is an opportunity to serve those who have served others by providing them with services such as painting, installing blinds, landscaping, cleaning and other general home repairs.
“Together, we have the power to impact the lives of veterans who have served and protected us,” said Lori Flores Rolfson, vice president – operations and maintenance, North Shore Gas. “It is an honor to give back to our service men and women and their families.”
CAPOLC has rehabbed six homes for veterans this year. This partnership helps rehab homes for veterans who have struggled to make repairs to their homes since serving in the Air Force and Navy.
In preparation for Home and Honor, North Shore Gas has been collecting donations to support Veterans Housing @Hervey. The items collected include decorations such as paintings, framed prints and posters, small appliances, window treatments, and bedding. Volunteers also repaired handrails and sidewalk by the homes, installed entry and storm doors, and built a platform for a new washer and dryer.
“Community Action Partnership of Lake County is excited to partner with North Shore Gas again this year for their Home and Honor volunteer day,” said Mary Lockhart White, executive director and CEO, CAPOLC. “Affordable housing is a huge barrier for many veterans in Lake County. Community Action Partnership and the veteran community are grateful for this opportunity.”

The Lake County 10-year plan is for 61 percent of homeless people to move from transitional housing to permanent housing. This project addresses the Lake County homeless reduction plan.
